Hot rods are a common part of American automotive culture which has spread across the world and is why many hot rods are American vehicles that have naturally large engine bays so that they can be modified to reach the top levels of linear speed that the engine is capable of producing.

There is no clear explanation for why the hot rod became known as the ‘hot rod,’ but there are a few explanations including the fact that most people view their modified cars as a hot accessory to their already carefully maintained appearance.  For the people who build hot rods, the culture is more than just building a great looking hot rod.

Of course, modifying the vehicle so that it runs better and reaches higher speeds is the main focus of a hot rod reconstruction, but past the initial construction of the hot rod there is an active culture for hot rod enthusiasts.

Hot rods are also very popular in Sweden were automobiles are a more than just transportation, but also an important statement of where you stand in society.  There are many clubs and meetings throughout Sweden for hot rod enthusiasts who not only want to restore their vehicles, but also trade, sell, and get inspiration for future hot rod modifications.

In the UK the sport is popular with both the old and young but there are differences in style, with younger drivers preferring small souped up, often Japanese, vehicles.

There are a growing number of dissents among hot rod enthusiasts as the older generation and the newer generation do not always see eye to eye anymore when it comes to modifications.  In the older days, hot rod modification was more of a salvage job focused on saving the more historical aspects of the job.

However, now most car rod enthusiasts simple replace older structures and engine pieces with carbon fibre or newer engine pieces in with the intention to sell off their creations to the highest bidder, or to take part in street racing.
